Task 1 (a): write a
critical evaluation of the purpose of music videos, with examples.
1: Music videos could
sometime be used to reinforce a political or social message that the artist
wants to give. For example song

2: Music videos could
sometime promote or advert some brands. For example there is a video of J.Lopez and Pitbull – on the floor. They are promoting
Swarovski crystals.

3: There are also music
videos with shots of films. In this way they are promoting movie. They are
using different shots of the movie. For example this is a song of U2 –
Elevation. They are promoting Lara Croft movie.
There are scenes of the movie and even some speech.

Some music videos is trying to interpret meanings. For example music video of
Lady Gaga – Alejandro is about about a woman's desire to resurrect a dead
love and who can not face the brutality of her present situation. The pain of
living without your true love.

Task 1 (b): critically
evaluate the styles and conventions of music videos, with examples.
1. Concert/performance. This is the simplest type
of music videos. Performers are just doing they performance on the stage. It could
be with some effects, but it isn’t a story in this.
2. Lip-Sync/ dance. In this type of music
videos there are always singing or raping to the camera. They are dancing as
well. Lip-Sync/dance type music videos are not story telling, so there are no
storyline at all.
3.Narrative. The most popular type of
music videos is narrative. It is like a short movie. The video shows what
performer wants to say about song. It could be also with short bits of dance or
lip-sync.
4.Impressionist. Usually in the impressionist music video
performers wants to tell people something. They usually use wide shots of
nature, sea or city and then close-ups of performers face. It could often be in
black in white to make music video look serious.
Task 2: Plan with
creativity and flair a music video using found and original footage.
